SUMMER SAILING AT SEA

Sparkling sailing conditions have greeted our RNSYC Squib Fleet on the first two Saturdays of the summer season. Last week, the cloudless sky brought light, flukey winds, whereas this Saturday, there was more wall to wall sunshine, but a relatively strong Northerly breeze. For both the sailors and our keen STARS (Support Team Assisting Races at Sea) the races presented plenty of challenges. The courses were set by Race Officers, Chris Merren and John Bird with Colin and Gloria Goodley helping the Squibs in and out of the harbour, and Bob and Zoe (last week) and Ben and Stuart (this week) thoroughly enjoyed moving marks and being in support on the club RIB, EP1. A total of 14 members of our STARS group have helped so far and we are very grateful for their enthusiasm and skills. On the sailing side, the racing couldn’t be closer. Six Squibs crews are keen to remember the tricks of sea sailing, after sailing for the last 6 months on the Broad, and conditions have been perfect for tuning and boat handling. The two afternoons have been great fun, with the varying conditions giving opportunities for short tacking near the beach as well as surfing down the waves with spinnakers up. All in all, it couldn’t have been a better start to the season.

Next Saturday we will be welcoming Laser sailors from the Eastern Region racing circuit. The Squibs will be sailing their two races on the same course in the afternoon. Do come and see what’s going on by joining us at lunchtime or in the Clubhouse afterwards.
