Ribsters – Trailer Maintenance Tips

A few tips & handy prompts (but not a complete list) from The Ribsters on getting your boat trailer ready for the season.

 

  • Check front security wire for any damage.
  • Check your tow hitch fixings, security, operation and grease where necessary.
  • Check main chassis for corrosion & cracks.
  • Check winch operation, make sure there are no unwanted cuts or abrasions on the strap and lubricate where necessary.
  • Check smooth operation of brakes (if fitted).
  • Check tyre pressures; If possible jack up your trailer and then check wheel bearings for noise, free play & smooth operation. Slowly rotate wheels and check for any distortion and cracks then slowly rotate again and check tyres for splits bulges & tread depth.
  • Check rollers for any damage. Make sure they are all secure and swivel well.
  • Make sure trailer board rods & securing bolts are not seized and grease where necessary.
  • Check all trailer board lights are working and you have the correct number plate J

A few tips & handy prompts( but not a complete list)  from The Ribsters on getting your outboard ready for the season.

As a bare minimum:

  • Arrange service if needed
  • Check fuel tank/s for any contamination and damage
  • Check the small uptake tube inside the tank for brittleness or damage and replace if necessary
  • Refill tanks with fresh fuel ( don’t forget your pre mix oil if needed)
  • Check fuel line & primer bubble for damage, leaks or any sign of perishing.
  • If 4 stroke check oil level
  • Check lower level oil level
  • Check power trim reservoir oil level
  • Grease up as per owner’s manual
  • Check operation of kill chord
  • Water test in the marina before heading out to sea
